VANCOUVER: BC Hydro is moving ahead with a major expansion of the Mount Pleasant Substation aimed at increasing electricity capacity and improving reliability along Vancouver’s rapidly growing Broadway corridor. The $90-million project is expected to provide additional capacity for up to 50,000 customers and support continued growth in housing, businesses and transportation infrastructure.
Energy and Climate Solutions Minister Adrian Dix said the Broadway corridor is one of Vancouver’s fastest-growing areas and requires an electricity system capable of keeping pace with new development. He said the investment will strengthen reliability and provide clean and dependable electricity for decades to come.
The project includes the installation of a third transformer along with additional electrical equipment and infrastructure upgrades. The new transformer is expected to arrive in early September and will be installed in an existing empty bay that was designed for future expansion.
BC Hydro said most construction will take place within the existing substation, helping minimize impacts on nearby residents and businesses. The project is expected to be completed in early 2029.
The Mount Pleasant upgrade is part of BC Hydro’s broader investment in Vancouver’s electricity system. Other major projects include modernization of the Mainwaring Substation, replacement of the Dal Grauer Substation in the West End and construction of a new East Vancouver Substation to replace the aging Murrin facility.
Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim said the investment will help the city’s critical infrastructure keep pace with population growth while supporting new housing, businesses and economic development along the Broadway corridor.
